Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum

The material stored in the museum reflects life, creations and spiritual experience of Lithuanian artists. The museum accumulates, preserves and examines showpieces related to the history of Lithuanian theatre, music and cinema; organizes collections' exhibitions and evenings in commemoration of various music, theatre and cinema artists. The exhibits collected in the Theatre Section – pictures, letters, placards, minutes, manuscripts, publications and other material about the theatre – make the greatest part of the Museum collections till now.

The Music Department stores collections of persons (composers, conductors, opera soloists, ballet artists and directors), music groups (orchestras, ensembles and choirs), musical theatres and societies.

The department can be proud of a valuable collection of musical XVIII-XX centuries instruments. This collection contains instruments made in Lithuania and foreign countries (harmoniums, pianos, grand pianos, bandoneons, kankles (Lithuanian chordophones), birbynes (Lithuanian aerophones), etc.) and original mechanical musical instruments.

The most significant part of the Art Section showpieces consists of the creative and biographical material of XIX century Lithuanian theatre and cinema artists. There are designs of scenography and costumes, technical drawings, layouts of scenography, toggery, property, designs of animation films and paintings.

The Cinema Section collects and preserves exhibits of Lithuanian film creators and film studios, antiquarian and modern film equipment. One of the best-known collections is the collection of Lithuanian Film Studio that contains shots of mostly Soviet films, pictures of shooting, cinema posters, texts of films, and equipment.
