Gediminas Tower of the Upper Castle

The Vilnius Castle Museum was opened in 1960 and in 1968 it became a subdivision of the National Museum of Lithuania. The exposition of the Vilnius Castle Museum displays reconstruction models of Vilnius castles of the second part of the XIV and the beginning of the XVII centuries, armament, iconographic material of  the Old Vilnius.

The well known photographs of the Baltic Way as well as the Lithuanian tricolour that was up on the Gediminas Castle Tower on March 11, 1990 are displayed on the second floor of the Gediminas Castle Tower. On August 23, 1989, a live chain of thousands of people extended from the Gediminas Castle Tower in Vilnius to the Tall Hermann Tower in Tallinn. The Baltic Way linked the Baltic countries when 2-2.5 million people, approximately 1 million of which were Lithuanians, joined their hands. The Baltic Way expressed the striving for independence and statehood of the Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians. The images marking the 20th anniversary of the Baltic Way are further supplemented with the visual material „Tautiška giesmė – aplink pasaulį“ (eng. „National Anthem – Around the World“) recorded by the Lithuanian yachtsmen who took part in the most popular event of the millennium – Millennium Odyssey – and sailed around the world.

An observation deck on the top of the tower is the best place to appreciate a magnificent Vilnius panorama.
